We have listed some of the remarkable cultural and natural landmarks in India that UNESCO has inscribed as World Heritage Sites in India.

8 Must-Visit Heritage Places in India

  1. Hampi, India

When the New York Times listed Hampi in their must-visit list for 2019, it became every traveller’s desired destination. A place of ancient ruins situated in Karnataka’s Bellary region, Hampi gives you a glimpse into the town’s rich history about how the town became an important religious centre for the Hindus. Hampi was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986.

  1. Kaziranga National Park, Assam

This national park inhabits the world’s largest population of one-horned rhinoceroses. It is because of its unique natural environment that Kaziranga National Park is inscribed as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in India.

  1. Humayun’s Tomb, Delhi

Known as the precursor to the Taj Mahal, Humayun’s tomb was built in the 16th century. The tomb is a work of Mirza Ghiyath and was instructed to build by the widow of Mughal Emperor Humayun. This Mughal architectural-styled tomb is also called the “Necropolis of the Mughal dynasty”.

  1. Nalanda Mahavihara, Bihar

A 5th century university of the Indian subcontinent, Nalanda Mahavihara was the centre for knowledge transfer for more than 800 years. This is what UNESCO says about Nalanda Mahavihara on its website “The historical development of the site testifies to the development of Buddhism into a religion and the flourishing of monastic and educational traditions.”

  1. Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park, Gujarat

This cultural site holds a huge collection of unexcavated archaeological properties within a prehistoric Chalcolithic site. It has palaces, agricultural structures, religious buildings, and fortifications – all these combined make a rich cultural heritage site.

  1. Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka, Madhya Pradesh

In 2003, UNESCO inscribed the Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka as one of the World Heritage Sites. It is a repository of rock paintings within sandstone formations that are believed to date back to the Mesolithic period. The paintings expand over nearly 2000 hectares of land area.

  1. Khajuraho Group of Monuments, Madhya Pradesh

These monuments belong to the Chandela dynasty in India. The monuments are an artistic blend of architecture and sculpture. A total of 85 temples were built, but only 22 survived. In 1986, UNESCO inscribed this site as an artistic proof of the Chandela Culture in India.

  1. Sun Temple, Konarak

This 13th century temple in Odisha is famous for its symbolic stone carvings. In 1984, UNESCO recognised its rich cultural heritage and listed it as one of the World Heritage Sites.
